About oral Hygiene

Poor or inadequate oral hygiene results in the accumulation of plaque around the gum line and in-between the teeth. Plaque is comprised of multiple species of bacteria that can eventually harden into crusty deposits of calculus (known as tartar). Once tartar forms your toothbrush and floss cannot remove it.

Plaque and calculus trigger an inflammatory process that leads to gums becoming red, swollen and easily bleed when touched, this is gingivitis. When this process starts to affect the bone that support the teeth the condition is referred to as periodontal disease. The supportive bone is lost, the teeth become increasingly loose and eventually are lost or prematurely removed.

Our Hygiene Program

We are proud of our dental hygiene program which has been running for over 20 years. The team of dental hygienists at Cleeland Dental are highly skilled and qualified to detect and record sites and extent of disease affecting the gums and bone and are specifically trained to use specialised instruments and techniques to detect and remove the plaque and calculus deposits.

Our dentists work closely with the dental hygienists to tailor customised plans for you to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.

There is now a large body of evidence that has linked poor dental hygiene with heart disease (heart attack and stroke), diabetes and respiratory issues.

Our practice is certified in Guided Biofilm therapy (GBT) and offers the most up to date equipment and education to manage and prevent gum and bone (periodontal) disease. Click here to read more about GBT.
