New
Patient Examination
What to expect on your first visit
At Cleeland Dental we welcome new patients into our dental family
Our Friendly staff are dedicated to caring for you and your family’s oral health. Our dentists provide comprehensive new patient examinations to address your dental needs and desires.
To understand what to expect from your first visit us, please read this page.
- The first thing the dentist will do at your initial examination is take some time to discuss your dental concerns, experiences and desires. A review of your general health issues along with a list of any prescribed medications and any supplements you may take.
- The dentist will then check your face and neck looking for any abnormalities such as lumps, bumps or swellings. The jaw will be checked for any clicks or deviations.
- The next thing is to check inside your mouth looking for any potential abnormalities in the soft tissues such as discolourations or ulcers on the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, hard and soft palates and gums. This is an oral cancer screening.
- An initial screen of the gums and supporting jaw bone is completed. A more comprehensive periodontal charting will be performed by our dental hygienists at a separate visit.
- Finally, the teeth are checked; recording any existing dental treatment, dental cavities or other problems.
Radiographs (x-rays) are often required to better check what is happening under existing fillings or in-between teeth, as well as what may be happening in the bone supporting the teeth.
All this information is then collated to provide you with an idea of the state of your dental health, from which any treatment recommendations can be made for your consideration.
You are never under any obligation to proceed with our treatment recommendations, but we make our recommendations as the best possible treatment options for you to consider.
